Face Masks

We have entered a new normal where a trip to the grocery store involves gearing up with gloves, face masks, and antibacterial wipes. Once the country opens up again, it will likely take a long time for everything to get back to normal. Even then, face masks will likely be worn by many on any foray outside their homes.

I realize that crocheted face masks do not provide optimal protection, and I have tried to increase their efficiency by sewing cloth to the back with a pocket to insert a filter. Until the supply of surgical masks catch up to the demand, I am using my homemade masks when I absolutely have to leave my home.

The flame is a fun design, and the good thing is that it’s a forgiving chart. Flames dance around and change shape, so making a mistake on the color chart won’t even be noticed!

Flame Face Mask Pattern

Materials:

I Love This Cotton yarn:

1/3 oz. black

1/4 oz. yellow

1/4 oz. red

Size G (4.0 mm) crochet hook

Yarn needle

Sewing thread

Small piece of woven fabric for lining

Directions:

Row 1: With black yarn, ch 14, sc in 2^nd ch from hook and each ch across (13 sc).

Rows 2-5: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st.

Row 6: Ch 1, turn, work according to chart with the following increases: *sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st,* repeat twice, 2 sc in next st (17 sc).

Rows 7-13: Ch 1, turn, work in sc, changing colors according to chart.

Row 14: Ch 1, turn, work according to chart with the following increases: *sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st,* repeat 3 times, sc in next st (21 sc).

Rows 15-20: Ch 1, turn, work in sc, changing colors according to chart.

Row 21: Ch 1, turn, work according to chart with the following decreases: *dec, sc in next 3 sts,* repeat 2 times, dec (17 sc).

Rows 22-27: Ch 1, turn, work in sc, changing colors according to chart.

Row 28: Ch 1, turn, with black yarn, *sc in 2 sts, dec,* repeat 3 times, sc in next st (13 sc).

Rows 29-32: Ch 1, turn, with black yarn, sc in each st.

Edging: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st with 2 sc in last st. Turn to work along top edge. Working in row ends, 4 sc, 8 hdc, 6 dc, 8 hdc, 4 sc. Turn to work in unused loops of starting ch, 2 sc in 1^st ch, sc across with 2 sc in last ch. Turn to work along bottom edge. Working in row ends, 4 sc, 8 hdc, 6 dc, 8 hdc, 4 sc. Ch 28 for ear strap (bottom corner), sl st in top corner. Fasten off. Attach yarn at top corner of opposite side, ch 28, sl st in bottom corner. Fasten off.

Weave in all ends.

Cut one piece of woven fabric according to pattern below.

Serge or zigzag edges of lining. Pin in place on inside of crocheted mask. Sew in place along top, one side, and bottom. Leave one side free to insert filter.

NOTE: This mask is not approved for use as anti-viral personal protective equipment, but rather falls into the category of homemade masks that are described by the CDC as suitable for use during severe resource limitations. From the CDC:

“HCP use of homemade masks: In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.”
