Balanced Rock Hat Crochet Pattern

balanced rock hat
Last month my husband had a business trip to Colorado Springs, and he asked me if I would like to go with him. I quickly googled “local yarn shop Colorado Springs” and found Ewe & Me Yarn Boutique, so of course I decided to go with him.
On our first day, it was cold with a light snow falling. I’m a Texas girl, and I don’t enjoy the cold weather! The next day was still cold but a beautiful sunny day, so I got out to explore.
Garden of the Gods
The desk clerk suggested that I visit Garden of the Gods. I had visited it on a family trip as a teenager, but my memories were vague.
The three main features of the park are Steamboat Rock, the Three Graces, and Balanced Rock. They were formed by sedimentary beds of red, pink and white sandstone and limestone that were deposited horizontally but have now been tilted vertically by the mountain building forces caused by the uplift of the Rocky Mountains and Pikes Peak. The following Pleistocene Ice Age resulted in erosion and glaciation of the rock, creating the present rock formations. Mother Nature is truly amazing!!
Next stop – Ewe & Me, A Yarn Boutique on Garden of the Gods Road. It’s a fiber artist paradise! So many beautiful colors and textures! This shop has everything a crocheter or knitter could ever want. I explained that I was looking for a locally made yarn, and I was ushered to a wall of beautiful hand-dyed Aran yarn by Haus of Ewe. What luck! There’s a reddish-brown colorway called Balanced Rock. I had to have it! My only regret is that I only brought one suitcase, so I had to leave behind so many of the beautiful colorways.
After we got back home, I started playing with the yarn to find out what shape it wanted to take. I’m very pleased with the results. I hope you will be too.

Penguin Ski Mask Crochet Pattern

Are you ready for another penguin design? This adorable Penguin Ski Mask is based on a pattern I made for all my children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. It was also a great seller at winter craft shows. Worked in back loops only, it creates a built-in ribbing to give the hat some stretch. The simple construction means the ski mask can be made in an evening, probably with colors you already have in your stash.

Materials:
Worsted weight yarn:
100 yards black
10 yards white
3 yards yellow
Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook

Gauge: 9 sc = 2″

Ski mask has built-in stretch due to working in BLO ribbing and fits 2-5-year-old child. Approximately 15” circumference and 8.5” tall.

Directions:
NOTE: Entire piece is worked in BLO to make ribbing.
Row 1: With black yarn, ch 35, hdc in 2nd ch, hdc across to last st, sl st in last st (33 hdc, 1 sl st).

Rows 18-24: Ch 1, turn, hdc in each st. Fasten off white yarn at end of Row 24.
Upper face:

Row 17: Attach black yarn in 6th st from lower face in Row 16. Ch 1, hdc in each hdc, hdc in sl st of previous row, hdc in next 2 hdc of previous row, sl st in last st. Continue working in pattern for upper face.
Row 18: Ch 1, turn, sl st in first st, hdc across.
Row 19: Ch 1, turn, hdc across, sl st in last st.
Row 20: Ch 1, turn, sl st in first st, hdc across.
Row 21: Ch 1, turn, hdc up to last 4 sts, sl st in next st, leave rem sts unworked.
Row 22: Ch 1, turn, sl st in first st, hdc across.
Row 23: Ch 1, turn, hdc across, sl st in last st.
Row 24: Ch 1, turn, sl st in first st, hdc across. Ch 5, sl st in Row 24 of lower face. Fasten off black.
Row 25: Return to lower face and attach black yarn at Row 24. Ch 1, turn, hdc in 15 hdc, hdc in 5 ch, hdc in 10 hdc, hdc in same st as sl st, hdc in 2 hdc of previous row, sl st in last st.

Fall Hat Month

Quail Ski Hat Crochet Pattern

According to the weatherman, it’s still summer, but the beginning of September has us anxiously awaiting the first day of fall. Chunky hats, football season, pumpkin spice everything, and of course, Halloween!

While living in West Texas a few years ago, I would watch a pair of scaled quail waddle down the street in the mornings. Often there were more quail, but they always walked in pairs. Their quiet beauty was the inspiration for the colors of this easy crochet hat pattern.

Materials needed:
Lion Hometown USA Super Bulky Yarn
1 skein Bar Harbor Blizzard (color A)
½ skein Anchorage Ice (color B)
Size K and M crochet hooks
Yarn needle
Fur pompom

Gauge: 5 rows = 2”, 6 sts = 2”

Hat measures approximately 22” circumference and 8 1/2” height

Directions:

BRIM:

Row 1: With color A and size K hook, ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from and each of the next 7 ch (8 sc).

Row 2: Working in back loops only, ch 1, turn, sc in each st.

Repeat Row 2 until brim measures approximately 22” (adult female size). Add or remove rows as necessary for correct fit. Do not fasten off.

With right sides together, sew first and last rows together.

HAT:

Rnd 1: With right sides together and size M hook, work 1 sc in each row end. Join with sl st in first sc. (For extra length, add 1-2 rows of sc here.)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, *sc in next 4 sts with color A, sc in next st with color B,* repeat around. Join with sl st.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, *sc in next st with color A, sc in next st with color B, sc in next st with color A* repeat around. Join with sl st.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, *sc in next st with color B, sc in next st with color A,* repeat around. Join with sl st.

Rnd 5: Ch 1, *sc in next st with color A, sc in next st with color B,* repeat around. Join with sl st.

Rnd 6: Ch 1, *sc in next 2 sts with color B, sc in next 2 sts with color A,* repeat around. Join with sl st.

Rnd 7: Ch 1, *sc in next 2 sts with color A, sc in next 2 sts with color B,* repeat around. Join with sl st.

Rnd 8: (Begin decreasing) Ch 1, *sc next 2 sts together with color B, sc in next st with color A, sc in next 2 sts with color B, sc in next st with color A* repeat around. Join with sl st.

Rnd 9: Ch 1, *sc next 2 sts together with color B, sc in next 2 sts with color B, sc in next st with color A* repeat around. Join with sl st. Fasten off color A.

Rnd 10: Ch 1, working only with color B for the remainder of the hat, *sc in next 3 sts, dec over next 2 sts,* repeat around. Join with sl st.

Rnd 11: Ch 1, *sc in next 3 sts, dec over next 2 sts,* repeat around. Join with sl st.

Rnd 12: Ch 1, *sc in next 2 sts, dec over next 2 sts,* repeat around. Join with sl st.

Rnd 13: Ch 1, *sc in next st, dec over next 2 sts,* repeat around. Join with sl st.
