Memorial Day weekend is considered the unofficial start of summer in the United States, and people will be flocking to beaches all over the country.
I grew up in Galveston County, Texas, so our family spent a lot of time at the beaches in Galveston and Freeport. Lazy summer days were spent collecting seashells, building sandcastles, wading in the water to search for minnows and hermit crabs, and eating picnic lunches on a blanket spread out on the sand. Later in life, I have taken my children to Jones Beach in New York, Castellamare beach in Sicily, Carolina Beach in Wilmington, and of course Galveston Beach. We also took the kids to Venice Beach on a California trip several years ago.

One of the greatest thrills in Galveston was the ferry ride to Bolivar Island. I remember driving up to get in line for the ferry. Wait times were usually about 30 minutes, but there was always a snow cone vendor to cool us down while we waited for the next ferry. The ride was so exciting! Once the ferry got started, we were allowed to get out of the car and stand on deck and allow the sea breeze to cool us. Sightings are rare now, but at that time, it was not uncommon to see a dolphin (or several) following the boat. Seagulls always screeched overhead waiting for tourists to throw them food. The ferry docked on the Bolivar side, and we would drive off the boat to go to Crystal Beach. Such wonderful memories!
