This is one of Bruno’s favorite toys. He loves to play tug of war, and the handle helps me hold onto the toy while he fights me for it.

Materials:

Cotton worsted weight yarn:

40 yards yellow

25 yards variegated

5 yards brown

1 yard black

Size G (4.0 mm) crochet hook

Yarn needle

Cotton stuffing

Squeaker insert

 

Finished toy measures approximately 6” tall.

Gauge: 5 rows = 1”, 5 sc = 1”

HEAD:

Rnd 1: With yellow yarn, ch 2 (or magic ring), 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join. Work in continuous rnds throughout.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around (12 sc).

Rnd 3: *Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st,* repeat around (18 sc).

Rnds 4-5: Sc in each st.

Rnd 6: *Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st,* repeat around (24 sc).

Rnd 7: *Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st,* repeat around (30 sc).

Rnd 8: *Sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st,* repeat around (36 sc).

Rnd 9: *Sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st,* repeat around (42 sc).

Rnds 10-11: Sc in each st.

Rnd 12: Working in BLO, sc in each st.

Rnds 13-14: Working in both lps, sc in each st.

Before starting dec rnds, use black yarn to embroider eyes, nose and mouth (see photo for placement).

Rnd 15: *Dec, sc in next 5 sts,* repeat 5 times (36 sc).

Rnd 16: *Dec, sc in next 4 sts,* repeat 5 times (30 sc).

Rnd 17:  *Dec, sc in next 3 sts,* repeat 5 times (24 sc).

Stuff face, add squeaker, add more stuffing.

Rnd 18: *Dec 3 times, *sc in next 4 sts, dec,* 3 times (18 sc).

Rnd 19: *Dec, sc,* repeat 5 times (12 sc). Finish stuffing.

Rnd 20: Dec 6 times (6 sc). Join with sl st. Fasten off and close Rnd 20.

MANE:

Mark center top of head at Rnd 12.

Count back 16 sts before marker. Attach brown yarn with sl st. *Sk 1 st, 5 dc in next st, sk 1 st, sl st in next st,* repeat 7 times. Fasten off brown.

HANDLE:

Rnd 1: With variegated yarn, ch 2 (or magic ring), 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join. Work in continuous rnds throughout.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around (12 sc).

Rnd 3: Sc in each st.

Repeat Rnd 3 until piece measures approximately 7”. Stuff handle but not too firmly. Leave it loose enough so that the handle will bend.

Last rnd: Dec 6 times. Fasten off yarn and close last rnd.

Sew each end of handle to bottom of lion. Make as many sts as needed to firmly connect the handle to the head.

A few yards white

1 yard red

Directions:

BODY:

Rnd 1: With pink yarn, ch 2. Sc 6 in second ch from hook. Do not join.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc (12 sc).

Rnd 3: *1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc,* repeat around (18 sc).

Rnd 4: *1 sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat around (24 sc).

Rnd 5: *1 sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat around (30 sc).

Rnds 6-13: Sc in each st.

Rnd 14: *Dec, sc in next 3 sc,* repeat around (24 sc).

Rnd 15: Sc in each st.

Insert 8” length of keychain at Rnd 1. If using safety eyes, insert at Rnds 7-8. Embroider mouth in red at Rnds 13-14. If desired, embroider several freckles across cheeks. Stuff firmly.

Rnd 16: *Dec, sc in next 2 sc,* repeat around (18 sc).

Rnd 17: *Dec, sc in next sc,* repeat around (12 sc). Finish stuffing.

Rnd 18: Dec around (6 sc). Join with sl st. Close with ultimate finish.

LEGS: (Make 2)

Attach pink yarn at bottom in Rnd 16.

*Work 5 fsc, [ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch, sc in next ch, sl st in bottom of 5th fsc] 3 times, sc in opposite side of 5 fsc, *sl st in adjacent st on Rnd 17. Sk center ring and sl st in next st of Rnd 17. Repeat * to * for second leg, sl st in adjacent st of Rnd 16.

LEFT ARM:

Attach pink yarn at side in Rnd 11, work 4 fsc, [ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch, sl st in bottom of 4th fsc] 3 times, sc in opposite side of 4 fsc, *sl st in adjacent st on Rnd 10.

RIGHT ARM:

Attach pink yarn at side in Rnd 10, work 4 fsc, [ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch, sl st in bottom of 4th fsc] 3 times, sc in opposite side of 4 fsc, *sl st in adjacent st on Rnd 11.

ANTENNAE: (Make as many as you would like)

Attach pink yarn to top of head with sl st, ch 5, 3 sc in 2nd ch, sl st in next 3 ch, sl st in same st as starting sl st. Fasten off. Glue (or sew) googly eyes to center of 3-sc cluster.

CROWN:

Attach pink yarn in Rnd 7 on left side, sc in same sp, 5 dc in Rnd 5, sc in Rnd 3, 5 dc in Rnd 1, sc in Rnd 3, 5 dc in Rnd 5, sc in Rnd 7, sl st in same sp.

Glue (or sew) googly eyes to center of each 5-dc cluster.

Weave in all ends.
