National Plant a Flower Day in Crochet

For crocheters, National Plant a Flower Day is the perfect inspiration to “plant” a few flowers of our own—with yarn and a hook! 🌼 While gardeners dig in the soil, crocheters can grow colorful blooms that last forever. From delicate appliqués and cheerful granny squares to full crochet bouquets, handmade flowers add a touch of spring to hats, blankets, bags, and home décor. It’s a lovely reminder that creativity, like a garden, grows beautifully one stitch at a time.

Today we have a roundup of free flower crochet patterns to kick off your spring crafting.

Sunflower Granny Square

sunflower granny square

Thirty years ago I was living in Queens, New York and pregnant with my son. A Ukranian lady in our neighborhood gave me a beautifully painted wooden spoon as a baby gift. She explained that hanging it over the crib would bring good luck to the child.

It was such a beautiful gesture from a woman I barely knew. That was my introduction to the beauty and generosity of the Ukranian people. We left New York a year later to return to my home state of Texas, but I think of her often, especially now with the horrible events that are happening in Ukraine now.  This week I sat down and made a Sunflower granny square in her honor using the colors of the Ukranian flag, and to honor all Ukranians in their struggle for freedom right now.

Crochet a few and stitch them in a row for a bright Sunflower scarf. Double up some cotton worsted yarn to make some Sunflower potholders for your kitchen. Brighten up your living room with a Sunflower Afghan. Oh, so many possibilities!
