Penguin Butt Ornament

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn:

8 yards black (MC)

5 yards white (CC)

2 yards yellow

2 yards pink (optional for heart)

Size G (4.0 mm) crochet hook

Ribbon

Gauge: 8 sc = 2″, 8 rows = 2″

Ornament measures 3.75” wide by 3.5” tall

Directions:

Row 1: With white yarn, ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, 4 sc in next ch. Working on opposite side of starting ch, sc in last lp (6 sc).

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in first st, 2 sc in each of next 4 sts, sc in next st (10 sc).

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first st, *2 sc in next st, sc in next st,* 4 times, 2 sc in last st (16 sc).

Row 4: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first st, sc in next st, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts,* 4 times, sc in next st, 2 sc in last st (22 sc). Fasten off white.

Row 5: Attach MC yarn, ch 1, turn, sc in next 3 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts,* 4 times, sc in next 3 sts (26 sc).

Row 6: Ch 1, turn, sc in next 3 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts* 4 times, sc in next 3 sts (30 sc).

Row 7: Ch 1, turn, sc in next 3 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 5 sts* 4 times, sc in next 3 sts (34 sc).

Row 8: Ch 1, turn, sc in next 3 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 6 sts,* 4 times, sc in next 3 sts (38 sc). Fasten off yarn. Weave in all ends.

Tail:

Insert hook into center st of Row 5. Ch 2, dc, ch 2, sl st in same sp.

Heart: (optional)

With pink yarn, ch 3, in 3rd ch from hook work 3 dc, 2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc, 3 dc, ch 2, sl st in same sp. Pull center tight. Fasten off yarn leaving 9” length. Sew centered on white portion.

Feet:

Attach yellow yarn to end of Row 7, ch 1, 4 hdc, ch 1, sl st in same st. Repeat on other side of Row 7.

Add a bow to the tail for decoration.

Cut a piece of ribbon approximately 12” long and fold. Pull through top of ornament and tie off for hanger.

NOTE:

Ornament can also be made with bulky yarn such as Bernat Pipsqueak (same yardage). Use yellow worsted even when using fluffy yarn.

Ornament measures 4” wide by 3.75” tall with Bernat Pipsqueak yarn.

Baby Penguin Amigurumi using Bernat Blanket Yarn

Bernat Blanket yarn

7.5 oz. vapor gray

2 oz. coal

8 yards white

2 yards sunsoaked

Crochet hook size M (9.0 mm)

Yarn needle

Fiberfill

2 black safety eyes 18 mm

Measures approximately 14” tall

Gauge: 7 sts = 3”, 6 rows = 3”

Directions:

HEAD AND BODY:

Rnd 1: Starting at bottom with gray yarn, ch 2 (or magic circle), 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join. Work in continuous rnds throughout.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around (16 sc).

Rnd 3: *Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc,* repeat around (24 sc).

Rnd 4: *Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc,* repeat around (32 sc).

Rnd 5: *Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st,* repeat around (40 sc).

Rnd 6: *Sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st,* repeat around (48 sc).

Rnd 7: *Sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st,* repeat around (56 sc).

Rnd 8: *Sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st,* repeat around (64 sc).

Rnds 9-19: Sc in each st.

Rnd 20: *Dec, sc in next 6 sts,* repeat around (56 sc).

Rnd 21: Sc in each st.

Rnd 22: *Dec, sc in next 5 sts,* repeat around (48 sc).

Rnd 23: Sc in each st.

Rnd 24: *Dec, sc in next 4 sts,* repeat around (40 sc).

Rnd 25: Sc in each st.

Rnd 26: *Dec, sc in next 3 sts,* repeat around (32 sc).

Rnds 27-28: Sc in each st.

Rnd 29: *Dec, sc in next 2 sts,* repeat around (24 sc). Fasten off gray. Stuff firmly.

Rnds 30-35: Attach black yarn. Sc in each st.

Rnd 36: *Dec, sc in next st,* repeat around (16 sc).

Rnd 37: Dec around (8 sc). Join with sl st. Fasten off leaving 6” length. Close using ultimate finish. (Thread needle with 6” length, insert needle into outer loop of each remaining st, pull tight.)

FACE:

Row 1: With white yarn, ch 8, sc in 2nd ch and in each of next 6 ch.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st (7 sc).

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each of next 7 sts, turn to work down edge, sc in row ends. Working in unused loops of foundation ch, *sl st in first lp, 5 dc in next lp, sl st in next lp* repeat once, turn to work sc down row ends on the other side. Fasten off leaving 12” length for sewing.

Attach safety eyes in center st of dc clusters of Row 3. Sew face to head.

BEAK:

Rnd 1: With yellow yarn, ch 2 (or magic circle), 3 sc in 2nd ch. Do not join. Work in continuous rounds throughout.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in first st, sc in next 2 sts (4 sc).

Rnd 3: 2 sc in first st, sc in next 3 sts (5 sc). Join with sl st. Fasten off leaving 9” length. Add a little bit of stuffing and sew to face centered below the eyes.

WINGS: (Make 2)

Row 1: With gray (or white) yarn, ch 8, hdc in 2nd ch and in next 6 chs. (7 hdc).

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, 2 hdc in first st, hdc in remaining sts (8 hdc).

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, hdc in each st with 2 hdc in last st (9 hdc).

Row 4: Ch 1, turn, 2 hdc in first st, hdc in remaining sts (10 hdc).

Fasten off leaving 12” length. Sew to sides of penguin with top of wing at Rnd 26 with longer edge toward the front. Weave in all ends.

FEET:

Row 1: With black yarn, ch 2, 2 hdc in 2nd ch.
Row 2: ch 1, turn, hdc first st, 2 hdc next st (3 hdc).
Rows 3-4: ch 1, turn, hdc across, 2 hdc last st (5 hdc).
Row 5: ch 1, turn, 2 hdc first & last sts (7 hdc).
Row 6: ch 1, turn, *hdc, sl st* 3 times, hdc last st. Fasten off and sew to bottom at rnds 4-8.
